Manchester City have reportedly withdrawn from the race to sign Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz in a boost to rivals Liverpool, who are also said to be keen on the midfielder.

BBC Sport’s Sami Mokbel reports that City are halting their interest in the Germany international because of the costs of a possible deal.

The report says a deal for the 22-year-old could cost “as much as 300m euros inclusive of transfer fees and wages”.

Wirtz is set to be one of the most in demand players this summer, having last season helped Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title and continuing his impressive form this season.

In other news, Spanish newspaper Marca claim Cristiano Ronaldo has interest from a Brazilian side which “opens up the possibility of playing in the Club World Cup”.

The four Brazilian clubs taking part in next month’s tournament in the United States are Palmeiras, Flamengo, Fluminense and Botafogo.

They also claim Ronaldo has grown frustrated at Al Nassr, who are yet to win a trophy since the Portuguese star moved there.

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that Liverpool have opened talks with Bournemouth over a move for full-back Milos Kerkez.

He says discussions are ongoing over a transfer fee for the player, who has impressed for the Cherries this campaign.

Meanwhile, Sky Sports report that Jeremie Frimpong will complete his Liverpool medical on Monday after flying into the UK on Sunday, ahead of his move from Bayer Leverkusen.

And Matheus Cunha is closing in on agreeing a move to Manchester United, also according to Fabrizio Romano, who says Cunha wants to move to the club.
