Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson insists that Trent Alexander-Arnold is only focused on returning to fitness and cast doubt over the widespread reports that he will join Real Madrid this summer.

Alexander-Arnold was reported last month to have agreed a contract with Madrid.

That deal is said to be five years in length and a substantial rise on his current Liverpool salary, although not terms that would put him among Madrid's very highest earners.

Robertson is suggesting that things maybe aren't as black and white, claiming "no one knows yet" what the immediate future holds for Alexander-Arnold.

"Trent's head is not great because he's injured," Robertson said. "He hates being injured, none of us like being injured but it hurts Trent a little bit more. That's all he is focused on.

"It is impossible for me to say we have not seen all the noise and everyone commenting on it. But for us our focus is for him to get back fit and healthy. Once he does that, what will happen, will happen. No one knows that yet. People can talk and speculate but for us we want Trent back very soon."

Alexander-Arnold has increasingly drawn the ire of Liverpool fans, the local lad seemingly intent on testing himself further afield in the second half of his career. Two posters displayed on terraced houses near Anfield before Wednesday's Merseyside derby openly questioned his loyalty.

The 26-year-old has made no secret of his desire to win the Ballon d'Or and make history in the process by becoming the first full-back to do so. But openly placing greater importance on an individual award than team prizes has also led to his priorities being questioned.

Alexander-Arnold suffered an ankle injury in the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain last month and isn't expected back on the pitch until the end of April. At that point, he would have only a matter of games left as a Liverpool player, before moving on as a free agent.
