Liverpool are reportedly very interested in the potential transfer of Benfica left-back Alvaro Carreras, whose return is also being explored by Manchester United.

The talented young Spaniard is in superb form for Benfica at the moment, and that seems to have top clubs on alert, though it won’t necessarily be an easy deal to get done.

Liverpool are described as tremendously keen on Carreras, but Man United are also exploring the possibility of bringing the player back to Old Trafford, according to Marca, citing Portuguese publications O Jogo and Record.

Carreras has a release clause worth €50m at Benfica, according to the report, but it’s also claimed that the Red Devils could trigger a buy-back option for just €20m, giving them a major advantage in the race for his signature.

It will be interesting to see what happens next with the 21-year-old, who could now get more chances at United than he did before, though Liverpool might also be seen as the more tempting option.

Alvaro Carreras has a decision to make

If Carreras is to leave Benfica, he needs to be sure he’s making the right step in his career, as he previously left Old Trafford at what was surely the right time after a lack of opportunities.

Returning to United might be tempting as there would now probably be a role for him ahead of struggling duo Luke Shaw and Tyrrell Malacia, but perhaps a fresh chapter would be better for him.

Liverpool will surely need to think about replacing Andrew Robertson soon, and Carreras looks a good option to eventually become the long-term first choice left-back for Arne Slot’s side.

LFC also generally have a more convincing project than MUFC right now, with the new ownership still working things out at Old Trafford.

It’s been a poor start to the season for United, and they’ll now hope things improve under new manager Ruben Amorim, but it will surely take some time, with Carreras probably better off opting for Anfield right now.
