Liverpool vs Tottenham team news

The Reds will be without Trent Alexander-Arnold for this game after he hobbled off in the 2-0 win at Bournemouth last weekend. However recent reports suggest the injury is less serious than initially feared.

Arne Slot said the defender requested to come off and there is little reason to risk his fitness with Conor Bradley able to come in for him.

This is a big game for Liverpool and you would imagine Slot will go for it. He’ll be expected to pick his two strongest centre-backs in Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk, though Kostas Tsimikas could continue at left back instead of Andy Robertson – as he did in the first leg.

Expect Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister to continue in central midfield once again. Dominik Szoboszlai can now slot in at No.10 after missing the first leg in a major boost to the Reds.

Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo should play on the wings as they bid to add to their flurry of seven goals between them in their last three games – while Luis Diaz should get the nod up front.

Tottenham have a host of issues to contend with, as is the case almost every week. The latest player on the injury scrap pile is centre-back Radu Dragusin, who is set to miss the rest of the season with an ACL injury. Luckily, Tottenham have just signed new defender Kevin Danso, who looks set to slot straight in alongside the returning Mickey van de Ven.

It could be a gamble as the pair have never played before but Postecoglou must go as strong as possible if he wants Spurs to reach the Wembley final.

Djed Spence will look to continue his fine form after a Man of the Match display in Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Brentford on Sunday. Meanwhile, goalscorer on that day Pape Sarr should have earned himself a place in midfield. Postecoglou could switch to a 4-3-3 and play Sarr alongside Bentancur and Lucas Bergvall – the match-winner from the first leg.

Up front Tottenham have new boy Mathys Tel available and he is another name who could go straight into the team. Postecoglou will have to chose between throwing him straight in or playing Richarlison, but this could be a great way to make a name for himself in such a big game. Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski will play either side.

Can Salah be stopped?

Mohamed Salah is in ridiculous form this season after netting his 20th and 21st goals of the Premier League season against Bournemouth on Sunday.

He made history after joining an exclusive club of players who have netted 20+ goals in five seasons or more. The Egyptian winger also went above Frank Lampard into six in the all-time Premier League scorers list with 178 strikes.

Salah is a big-game player and it seems inevitable he’ll score at least once against Spurs, who are one of his favourite opponents. He has netted a total of 14 goals against the north London outfit. Manchester United are the only team he has a better goals-scoring record against (16).

The message is an obvious one to Tottenham: keep Salah quiet and you have a good chance of reaching a cup final. Of course, Spurs will have to be on their guard to ward off Liverpool’s numerous other threats, including the in-form Gakpo and Diaz.

This is a big moment for Tottenham and a crucial point in their season. There had been talk that despite all the pressure Postecoglou had been under after losing 13 matches in the Premier League, he was being kept in a job because the club recognised they were still in three cup competitions.

Well, after this weekend, there’s a very good chance they could go out of two. Spurs travel to Aston Villa on Sunday in a very tricky FA Cup tie after this mammoth Carabao Cup showdown and the pressure is on Postecoglou to deliver some glimmer of hope amid a turbulent campaign. He’s got two new signings on board, but his squad is still pretty stretched, with a total of nine players set to miss this game.

But after a crucial 2-0 win over Brentford, the heads would have been lifted and there will be some optimism that this can be a turning point in their season, especially if they can secure their place at Wembley.
