It’s been a disastrous campaign for Luton Town since suffering relegation from the Premier League last year.

The Hatters fought to keep their place in the top flight quite valiantly but ultimately finished 18th under Rob Edwards.

However, their return to the Championship has gone terribly, and Matt Bloomfield’s side are in danger of suffering another relegation.

A 1-0 win over Portsmouth on Saturday lifted them up to 22nd in the table with 11 games to go, but the gap to 21st place Cardiff City is still five points.

Luton town’s losing mentality

When asked what the biggest issue at the Hatters is right now, FLW’s Luton fan pundit Simon Mills raised his concerns with their losing mentality.

He believes the season in the Premier League sapped the team of their ability to win games, but is hopeful the victory over Portsmouth can turn the tide on their relegation fight.

“The biggest issue at our club is the losing mentality,” Mills told Football League World.

“We hopefully have broken it by beating Portsmouth 1-0.

“But, I cannot overstate how much the Premier League can break a club’s ethos and mentality.

“Although we gave it one hell of a go in the Premier League, we became so used to losing football matches that it bled over to our Championship season.

“I hope that we will go on to secure safety and building again from there.

“That is what I’d say is the biggest issue.”

Next up for Luton is a trip to face promotion-chasing Burnley at Turf Moor on 8 March in a 3pm kick-off.

Portsmouth win could be the catalyst for a turnaround

Luton desperately needed a win after going so long without a result, and Bloomfield needed even more so.

Beating a potential relegation rival as well should give the team an added boost, and they now have 11 games to turn things around.

Surviving in the Championship could give Luton the chance to reset in the summer, which is sorely needed after such a rotten campaign.

Supporters have been on quite the journey at Kenilworth Road in the last several years, and another relegation would be a really sour note to land on just two years after the high point of winning the play-off final at Wembley.
