Carlton Palmer believes that Tom Cannon will prove to be worth the £10 million that Sheffield United have reportedly paid to sign him from Leicester City.

According to Sky Sports, the Blades agreed a deal with the Premier League side with an upfront value of £10 million.

The 22-year-old spent the first half of the campaign on loan with Stoke City, where he contributed nine goals from 22 appearances.

Chris Wilder will now be hoping his impending arrival will boost their automatic promotion chances, with the team currently inside the top two.

Carlton Palmer has praised the new Sheffield United owners for backing Wilder in the transfer market this month.

He believes that the price to sign Cannon, which could rise to £13 million through add-ons, is a fair figure for the Ireland international.

Sheffield United’s new owners have backed Chris Wilder in this January transfer window,” Palmer told Football League World.

“I think it’s a magnificent bit of business bringing in Tom Cannon.

“£10 million up front is a lot, with £3 million in add-ons, but I think it’s a fair price.

“Tom will come in now and he will fire the goals to get Sheffield United up, I believe.

“I said at the start of the season that Leeds would go up with Sheffield United, and I think the business that Chris Wilder has done in the summer, the business he’s just done now, he’s brought in very, very good players.”

Palmer expects goals from Tom Cannon

Palmer has claimed that Cannon could score at least 10 goals for Sheffield United this season, and will be ready for life in the Premier League, if they get there.

“Tom will score goals without a doubt,” he continued.

“If they create chances, he will score goals.

“He scored nine goals in 22 Championship outings on loan with Stoke City in a side that’s struggling in the bottom end of the league.

“So he’s got nine goals, if he’s in a side that’s creating chances and playing the way Sheffield United do, you’re thinking he could end up with at least 10 goals between now and the end of the season, if not more.

“And also, he’ll be able to perform in the Premier League, so I think it’s a magnificent bit of business.

“If you’re going to bring in a striker to play in the Premier League, you’re going to pay £20, 30 million for it, so I think it’s a fair price.

“A good bit of business by Chris Wilder and I think you’re going to see Sheffield United kick on now and take a stranglehold on the Championship in the second half of the season.”

Cannon signing is a big investment in Wilder

Bringing in Cannon for this much shows the new owners are committed to investing in the first team and Wilder, which is positive.

The fee itself is a bit much for someone whose performances in the Championship haven’t particularly stood out, despite a record of nine goals in 22 games for an underwhelming Stoke side.

Four of those goals came in the Potters’ 6-1 win over Portsmouth at the start of the campaign, meaning he bagged just five in 21, which isn’t a spectacular return.

There’s every chance his record can improve by playing in a better team, but £10 million will put pressure on him to perform well immediately.
