Barcelona’s preparations for their crucial UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg against Inter Milan have taken a significant hit, with AS reporting that Alejandro Balde has officially been ruled out of the fixture.

The left-back’s recovery has not gone to plan, and Hansi Flick will now be forced to rethink his defensive setup ahead of Tuesday night’s massive clash.

Just days ago, there was growing optimism around Balde’s potential return. The 21-year-old had been expected to feature against Real Valladolid this weekend to build match rhythm ahead of the Inter showdown.

But alarm bells rang on Thursday when Balde’s return to training produced mixed sensations. Ultimately, he was excluded from the matchday squad for the league fixture, and now, his hopes of playing against Inter have been dashed altogether.

A blow for Barcelona

For Flick, this comes as a major setback. Balde’s pace, attacking thrust, and defensive recovery have been pivotal for Barcelona when facing high-calibre opposition.

Without him, the tactical flexibility that Flick prefers on the flanks will be significantly diminished.

The German coach is now reportedly leaning towards using a more traditional four-man backline to compensate for Balde’s absence on the left side.

El Clasico now a realistic target

The focus internally has now shifted towards ensuring Balde is ready for the upcoming El Clasico against Real Madrid on May 11—a fixture that could have major implications for the La Liga title race.

Until then, Barcelona will have to manage without one of their brightest young stars in one of their most decisive games of the season.

Although Flick had been cautious about rushing Balde back, especially given the intensity of Champions League knockouts, the initial expectation was that the full-back might be fit in time.

However, the final medical and physical assessments have confirmed he won’t be risked.
