Man City and Newcastle sit fifth and sixth respectively in the Premier League table, having lost their most recent matches. They were overtaken by Chelsea, who could be five points clear should they win their match on Friday night.

The home sides will be the favourites here, having won their past 15 Premier League home games against Newcastle. Only three teams have had longer such winning runs against an opponent in English men’s top-flight history.

Man City vs Newcastle team news

Man City suffered in more ways than one in their midweek Champions League defeat. Both Jack Grealish and Manuel Akanji had to come off in the 2-3 loss to Real Madrid through injury.

Grealish was replaced by Phil Foden in the first half, and that’s a natural replacement for the weekend. Foden would have been a guaranteed starter anyway, but this just limits Pep Guardiola’s options for any rotation.

Akanji had to come off at half-time against Real Madrid, replaced by Rico Lewis. And Akanji has been ruled out for eight to 10 weeks by Guardiola. But we may see a return to right-back for Matheus Nunes, who had started Man City’s past four league games in that position. John Stones started at the base of midfield for Man City, but Mateo Kovacic should replace him. Nathan Ake and Ruben Dias are likely to retain their centre-back roles.

Anthony Gordon has had positive news regarding a recent injury worry and will be back to face Man City. It’s a big boost for Newcastle, who are still missing a few players. Joelinton is the biggest miss, and the Brazilian isn’t back until next month due to a knee injury.

Dan Burn could also be available, with scans on a groin injury showing nothing serious. But he will face a late fitness test. And Eddie Howe will be hopeful he is available, with Sven Botman out. Fortunately, that injury isn’t as bad as first feared either.

Harvey Barnes and Jamaal Lascelles will join Joelinton on the sidelines, with the former hopeful of returning before the month is up.

Erling Haaland takes on Alexander Isak

What a battle this should be. Two of the best strikers in the Premier League, facing off to try to fire their teams to victory.

In the Man City corner is Erling Haaland. The Norwegian looks like he won’t secure a third consecutive Premier League Golden Boot, but he’s still having a strong season.

Haaland has scored 19 goals in the league this season, second only to Mo Salah. He leads the Premier League for shots (92) and shots on target (53), while also being second for big chances scored (16).

He’s had chances too, ranking second for Expected Goals (18.23) and xG on Target (20.24), while being first for non-penalty xG (16.65).

Isak has scored 17 Premier League goals this season, two behind Haaland. But they have the same rate when it comes to per 90 minutes, and Isak has also provided more assists.

The Swede sits third for xG (14.14) and xGOT (14.3), as well as non-penalty xG (13.35). He also leads the Premier League for right-footed xG at 9.4. Haaland is second for left-footed xG at 11.33 — of course behind Salah.
