Pep Guardiola’s quest to replace Rodri begins with a tough trip to St. James’ Park
Pep Guardiola could turn to Mateo Kovacic in midfield against Newcastle at St. James’ Park as he looks to fill the Rodri-shaped hole in his side.
In what represents a potentially seismic blow to the champions, the Spanish midfielder is set to miss an extended period of time after suffering a serious knee injury in last Sunday’s fiery 2-2 draw with Arsenal.
Kovacic came on for Rodri at the Etihad Stadium, and could be partnered by Ilkay Gundogan with Kevin De Bruyne potentially still absent with a groin issue.
“I don’t know. Yesterday [Monday] he didn’t train, today [Tuesday] I didn’t see him. So I don’t know,” said Guardiola of De Bruyne after the win over the Hornets.
John Stones, who scored City’s last-gasp equaliser against the Gunners, could start, having played 90 minutes in the midweek 2-1 Carabao Cup victory against Watford. Rico Lewis may also return in place of Kyle Walker.
Jack Grealish, another substitute last weekend, might also get a start ahead of Jeremy Doku, while Phil Foden may have to continue his return from the bench.
Predicted Man City XI (4-3-2-1): Ederson; Lewis, Stones, Dias, Gvardiol; Kovacic, Gundogan; Bernardo Silva, Savio, Grealish; Haaland
Doubts: De Bruyne
