Manchester United’s problems at left wingback are well known with Ruben Amorim forced to play Diogo Dalot in that position due to his versatility.
The Portuguese coach has admitted that his compatriot is more suited to the right-hand side but owing to Luke Shaw’s injury-enforced absence and Tyrell Malacia’s form, Amorim has had no other choice but to keep playing Dalot.
The former Sporting Lisbon boss has already informed INEOS that he would like to add to his wingback options during the January window.
Names like Alphonso Davies, former academy graduate Alvaro Fernandez and Serie A superstar Theo Hernandez have all been linked with a move to Old Trafford.
Now, Tuttosport (via Football Italia) have added Inter Milan ace Federico Dimarco to the list and have claimed that the Red Devils had spoken to his camp regarding a winter switch to Manchester in recent weeks.
The 27-year-old has three goals and five assists this season while last term, he managed six goals and eight assists, which highlights his attacking ability, a must in the modern game.
Add to this the fact that he plays mainly as a wingback for the Nerazzurri and the Italian would have been the perfect fit for Amorim’s system.
However, Dimarco has turned down the 20-time English league champions in favour of staying at the San Siro with Inter now ready to offer a brand-new contract extension to their star defender.
The Italy international is a boyhood fan of the club and has no interest in moving on in the winter. His current deal is valid until 2027 with the Serie A giants preparing to extend his deal by a year or two.
Dimarco has a market value of €60 million and Inter will likely ask for more to part ways with their talisman, something the Red Devils cannot afford to pay due to their PSR situation.
Arsenal had also tried and failed with an attempt last summer and it will be interesting to see which player United turn to to solve the left wingback mess.
As per reports, United cannot go all gung-ho in the winter and it remains to be seen if the club dip into the loan market to address the situation or sell players to fund new arrivals.
