Manchester United U18s returned to winning ways on Tuesday evening, beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 at the Carrington Training Centre.
Head coach Adam Lawrence made three changes to the side that started in the goalless draw with Newcastle United last weekend.
Jariyah Shah was handed his debut, Daniel Armer replaced Godwill Kukonki in defence, and Louie Bradbury got his first start of the season.
United started the game on the front foot but could not convert their chances, a reminiscence of their fortunes against Newcastle.
Bradbury had an effort hit the crossbar, and goalkeeper George Hardy made a good save to prevent James Bailey’s free-kick from going in.
United eventually opened the scoring in the 39th minute. Jaydan Kamason did well to beat his marker before setting up Bradbury for the goal.
Wolves soon levelled the scoring. Minkyu Ji delivered a cross beyond the reach of goalkeeper Cameron Byrne-Hughes, and Jake Wilcox headed the ball home.
Bradbury came close to restoring United’s lead, while Wilcox almost scored for Wolves before the break.
Early in the second half, Gabriel Biancheri put the ball in the net from Amir Ibragimov’s pass, but his effort was ruled out for offside.
Substitute Victor Musa also struck the crossbar before United finally got the winning goal in the 81st minute as Saheed Olagunju turned the ball into his own net from Kamason’s cross.
Olagunju almost made amends for his earlier mistake, forcing Byrne-Hughes to make a decent save late in the game.
The victory put an end to United’s three-game winless streak. They are now two points behind table-toppers Manchester City in the U18 Premier League North standings.
They return to action at fifth-placed Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.
