Manchester United will have to fend off competition from both Real Madrid and Barcelona if they are to re-sign left-back Alvaro Carreras, a report has claimed.

New United head coach Ruben Amorim is keen to bolster at left-back in 2025 and the Red Devils are already believed to have started work in that regard by striking a deal for 17-year-old Cerro Porteno talent Diego Leon.

However, a more senior option could be targeted as well and United have been tipped to re-sign Carreras, who was known as Alvaro Fernandez during his time in the United academy between 2020 and 2024.

United have a buy-back option for Carreras, with former manager Erik ten Hag seemingly confirming the Red Devils could trigger the clause in 2025.

According to A BOLA (via Sport Witness), the arrival of Amorim has only strengthened United's interest in Carreras, who the new boss watched closely during his time in charge of Portuguese rivals Sporting CP.

However, while United have the upper hand thanks to their buy-back clause, which is understood to sit at €20m (£16.6m), they will still have to convince Carreras to reject interest from Madrid and Barcelona if they want to win the race for his signature.

Both La Liga giants are on the hunt for a new left-back and could see Carreras as a cost-effective option, although Benfica are prepared to do what they can to hold on to the 21-year-old defender until the summer transfer window.
