WSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official media update from The Cityzens this morning.
The 31-year-old centre-back sustained the injury during last week’s UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage fixture against SKN St Pölten at The Joie Stadium. Greenwood left the field just after the half-hour mark and was replaced by Laia Aleixandri. Manchester City went on to win the tie 2-0.
Greenwood’s injury has now been fully-assessed by the Manchester City medical team and it has been confirmed that she has suffered Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) damage. It has been reported that the problem has already been addressed and the player will now begin the rehabilitation process. Manchester City have not put a timeframe on Greenwood’s recovery, however, she is likely to play again this season and her UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 hopes are not thought to be immediately at threat.
Manchester City have already missed Greenwood. The Cityzens lost 2-1 at Everton in the Barclays Women’s Super League on Sunday while they went down 3-0 to FC Barcelona in the UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage last night.
Greenwood is not expected to be ready to return to action when Manchester City resume their season following the Christmas break.
