Manchester United are edging ever closer to signing Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Matheus Cunha in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Heavily linked with Man United for weeks, Cunha is believed to be the club’s top transfer target up top, especially as they seek to improve their goalscoring capabilities.
What’s more, the feeling appears to be mutual, with The Peoples Person noting that Cunha is leaning towards a move to Old Trafford despite competing interest from Arsenal.
United’s interest in Cunha is believed to be so great that a personal meeting was reportedly scheduled in order to advance a deal.
Now, the details of the potential deal appear to be coming to light, as per a new update provided by Goal Brazil reporter Valentin Furlan.
“#ManUtd deal for Matheus #Cunha expected to hit €80M — €74M clause + €6M in extras,” he wrote on X.
“Despite #Arsenal’s late approach — as reported — talks with #Wolves’ ST keep moving forward.”
“Verbal agreement close, final steps on personal terms underway. #Transfers”
Notably, this would be €6m more than Cunha’s release clause, potentially signalling United’s desperation to beat Arsenal to his signature.
Although United’s fortunes up front have improved in recent times, it’s still clear that the club is in desperate need of a clinical finisher to lead the attack.
Rasmus Hojlund has hit the back of the net just 10 times in 49 matches in all competitions, with six of these goals coming in the Europa League against arguably weaker opposition than what is found in the Premier League.
In addition to United’s attacking woes, Joshua Zirkzee remains unavailable due to injury. In fact, he could remain sidelined for the rest of the season due to his hamstring setback.
But even if Zirkzee was available, the lack of an elite out-and-out striker at Old Trafford is alarming to say the least.
Ultimately, United need to sign a competent striker this summer, whether that happens to be Cunha or not. Otherwise, there may be no way of improving in the leaps and bounds that the club needs to make in order to improve next season.
