Manchester United star adds to incredible European record with 25th assist

Bruno Fernandes added to his impressive record in European competition tonight in Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Greek champions PAOK.

No player has assisted more goals in Europa League history than the Manchester United caption, who is level with Borek Dockal on 16, as per BBC Sport.

Even better, Fernandes has recorded more assists in major European competition (25) than any other player since his European debut for Sporting in September 2017.

Fernandes started against PAOK and played in behind Rasmus Hojlund.

While he was unable to provide service for the centre forward, the Portugal national provided a stunning cross for Amad Diallo’s headed opener shortly after the interval.

The goal gave United a much-needed advantage in the game to kick on and secure their first win in Europe this season, after drawing the three previous matches.

European embarrassment over for now

The performance was lacking against a below-average side, but United will need to improve if they are to climb up the Europa League standings.

Coming into this fixture, United had tasted victory in just one of their last 11 matches in Europe, having drawn all three of their Europa League games this season – against Twente, Porto and Fenerbahce.

Fernandes missed the draw against Fenerbahce after receiving two yellow cards against Porto.

Tonight we saw our first win in 380 days in Europe.

At least Amad Diallo gave us something to be hopeful and excited about.

United are back in action on Sunday when they welcome Leicester City to Old Trafford in the Premier League. It will be Van Nistelrooy’s final game in charge as interim manager and it remains to be seen if he will be kept on as part of Ruben Amorim’s staff.

Van Nistelrooy has made it no secret that he wants to stay and help the club. He can do that by ensuring we win on Sunday.
