Lazio coach Marco Baroni previewed Sunday’s clash against AC Milan while providing some updates on the injury front.

Marco Baroni Upbeat Despite Coppa Italia Defeat

This will be the Biancocelesti’s second trip to Milan in the space of five days. Their previous one ended with an elimination from the Coppa Italia at the hands of Inter Milan. Moreover, the club settled for a disappointing stalemate last weekend in Venezia. But in his pre-match press conference (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), Baroni insists he remains optimistic about his team’s path.

We are always confident and optimistic, but also disappointed. We wanted to play the Coppa Italia semi-finals. It’s an important competition. Anger is a feeling that never brings you anything, you must have strong support and think about the things you can improve. That is what we are focused on.

Many have pointed out Taty Castellanos’ absence as the main factor behind Lazio’s attacking shortcomings in recent weeks, with Loum Tchaouna and Tijjani Noslin failing to fill the void left by the Argentine. Nevertheless, Baroni believes the responsibility lies on everyone.

Scoring goals is everyone’s responsibility, we have always scored as a team. Castellanos is an important player, but it is the team that must have the solution. The key is in the group not in the individuals. In addition to scoring, I see other aspects in the match. Tijjani and Loum have played well, we must support them all together. The weight of the goal and the attack is not on the centre forward alone, we must work as a team. They are two guys who are giving an important contribution, I hope they can do even more soon.

Baroni offered positive updates on the conditions of Alessio Romagnoli, who suffered muscle fatigue in midweek, in addition to Patric and Matias Vecino who have recently returned to training following lengthy stoppages.

Romagnoli is doing better. He’s done some recovery work. We still have two sessions to go so we’ll evaluate him. I think he’s in the recovery phase, it was my preventive choice on Tuesday. Patric is better. Yesterday he worked with the team (after suffering a relapse in recent days). Now I’ll evaluate him in these two training sessions to understand if he can come with us to San Siro. Vecino is a fundamental player for us. When a player returns from injury, you have to listen to him and understand how he feels. Matias is very close to returning. He almost took part in the entire session with the group, so I will speak to him. He will not play from the start, but we will see if he can play during the game.

Finally, Baroni insisted Milan remain one of the best sides in the country despite their recent struggles.

Milan is a very strong team, especially on the individual level. They have great offensive projection. For us it remains a tough but beautiful challenge. Of course they remain in the race for the Champions League. Milan is a team that can win many games. In January, they changed several players, but they remain a group with great individuals. We must work as a team and limit their qualities to a minimum.
