Enzo Maresca has just taken his press conference after Chelsea were beaten 3-0 by Brighton in another feeble showing from his team.
A journalist there asked if he’d seen a “lack of desire” from his players in this game.
And instead of denying it, Maresca actually accepted the premise that his team were showing a real lack of desire in some of these games, as they regularly allow themselves to be rolled over by smaller sides – and especially in the way they show so little ability to fight back in a game once they’ve gone behind.
“It’s something we need to think about, we need to talk. Thirteen games to go and winning tonight would be one point from third. We approached the game well. Until Mitoma’s goal, we were in control but after the goal we lost, not the balance, but we lost something.”
Cole Palmer rides a challenge against Brighton.
Maresca was also asked about Cole Palmer and the obvious frustration he showed in the game, and he admitted that his star players wasn’t looking happy, although he put a positive spin on it:
“I think also in one way it can show the desire of Cole to improve things but it’s not just about Cole. When you don’t win games, it’s normal they are not happy, when we win games, everyone is happy. I said it about the fans and it’s the same with players,” the manager said.
“For sure, we need all of them in this moment to be more positive because this is a moment where we need to stick together and finish in the correct way.”
Well it’s up to you to get them playing Enzo, and to get them to show some desire. Right now it’s not good enough.
