Mo Salah delivered an honest verdict on Liverpool’s performance against Southampton on Saturday as they came from behind to win 3-1 at Anfield.
Will Smallbone gave the visitors a surprise lead on the stroke of halftime, but the Reds turned it around in the second half following Darwin Nunez’s equaliser in the 51st minute.
Salah said “Southampton had a good game plan” as they prevented him from taking any shots in the first half, but he found the target twice from the penalty spot after the break to keep Liverpool‘s title charge on track.
The Merseyside outfit have extended their lead over challengers Arsenal at the top of the table to 16 points, albeit having played two games more.
Salah revealed that Arne Slot made his dissatisfaction with his side’s display clear in the dressing room during the interval. “It was a bit of frustration. His head was going for us,” the Egyptian winger told Premier League Productions.
“We were sloppy and slow in the first half. I don’t think we played good today. If you want to win the Champions League or Premier League you have to win these games like that.”
Salah’s brace has moved him up to fifth in the Premier League’s all-time scoring charts, level with former Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero on 184 goals. His 44 goal involvements this season (27 goals, 17 assists) is the joint-most in a 38-game season, with only Andrew Cole in 1993-94 and Alan Shearer in 1994-95 having more (both 47).
Liverpool don’t play in the Premier League again until April. In the meantime they welcome PSG to Anfield for the return leg of their Uefa Champions League last-16 tie and face Newcastle in the League Cup final.
