Newcastle 2 Arsenal 0 (4-0 on aggregate) – Wednesday 5 February 8pm
Instant fan / writer reaction from some of our regular contributors on The Mag.
For all their ‘quality’, Arsenal haven’t managed a single goal against us in over 4 and a half hours of football.
If only we had them in the FA Cup this weekend.
I don’t know what was best: the atmosphere, the result or the performance.
Every player was quality but Botman was spectacular and Gordon unplayable.
As much as I believe Livramento is the future, I still think Trippier is such a calming presence in our side. He dictates the play well and, despite being the height of my 11 year old, he seems to win every header.
He made a couple of crucial one on one tackles today too.
So proud of Eddie and all the lads.’
Nat Seaton:
‘Special, special night !!
Privilege to have been inside St. James’. Great atmosphere and great game.
Oh and by the way we beat the Arsenal 2-0 again!
We’re going back to Wembley, what a feeling 🙂
Thanks lads, we’ll all be smiling all the way from now until the final.’
The Armchair Fan:
‘Whoo hoo!
Absolutely and utterly amazing!
Let’s bring that cup home!
Happy days!’
David Punton:
‘Magnificent Mags and we’re off to Wembley again!
It was an electric night under the lights at SJP as we pretty much coasted through to the League Cup final against our old pals Arsenal.
Chatter about five at the back gave way to a tactical masterclass from Eddie Howe and his team.
We’re dreaming again.
It was a breathless start and you have to say Isak was awesome against their two centre halves.
The planning for March 16 starts now – can manager and players somehow come up with a plan to go one better this time around.
We’ve beaten Arsenal comfortably over the two legs and no major panic, bar them hitting the post.
I’d have taken that loss at the weekend to progress tonight.
The stadium was amazing tonight – do we really want to leave the old place?
See you all in Trafalgar Square!’
Matt Busby said to…:
‘It’s not meant to be like this is it?
Give all those players in black and white shirts a medal. And another one next month.
Tell me ma!’
Tony Mallabar:
‘Once again, Eddie comes up with a tactical plan to guide us to a comfortable 2-0 victory.
Quite frankly when I saw the team I thought he’d got it wrong.
Personally, I just don’t understand how he gets by as our manager without my stunning football insight.
If it’s not Gordon, Tonali or Murphy, he’s got going great guns.
Joking aside, take a bow nice guy Eddie and tell me mam ( again).’
Simon Ritter:
‘When I walked into a sports bar in Alicante and saw a ceramic image of the Titanic steaming away on her first and last voyage, I feared the worst.
Two long hours later, the celebrations were in full swing.
A top performance duly rewarded.
Sir Eddie shuffled the pack, tried a 5-4-1 and it worked a treat.
Wembley here we come!’
Mark Jankowski:
‘I was relatively relaxed coming into the game and my confidence wasn’t misplaced.
Despite our recent home struggles against mid-table opposition we’ve been excellent all season long against the top teams.
Two years ago we negotiated our way past Southampton to reach Wembley.
This time we’ve taken on one of the big boys and have comprehensively taken them apart.
Spurs or Liverpool in the final?
I don’t care, we can beat either of them!’
