Newcastle United goal gluttons

I’ve been looking back at a few goal gluttons and it was no surprise to see that Wor Jackie Milburn was way out in front when it came to the Newcastle United highest goalscorer in league football.
Jackie plundered 177 goals during a post-war decade of sterling service.
Second on the list is the great Len White (pictured above), with a tally of 154.
When I was younger man, I used to love listening to some of the older blokes at work reminiscing about Len.
I even went to his belated testimonial at Whitley Bay’s Hillheads ground in 1986.
Next up with 148 league goals for United is a more modern day phenomenon, Alan Shearer.
Unlike the aforementioned three strikers, Big Al never received a winners medal or won a trophy with Newcastle.
I was pleased to see that he was included in United’s Carabao Cup celebrations and definitely felt his emotion when he explained what the win meant to him.
The irrepressible genius that was Hughie Gallacher is the last man to captain Newcastle United to winning the First Division (now Premier League), way back in 1927.
Coincidentally, 1927 was also the year that Colonel James Herbert Porter introduced Newcastle Brown Ale to the World, so what a title celebratory party that may have been.
Wee Hughie Gallacher devastatingly managed to score 133 goals league goals in only 160 games for United and will always stand immortal as a Toon legend.
Although not a centre forward, Peter Beardsley scored 108 league goals in his two spells at Gallowgate.
Pedro is undoubtedly one of the most skilful players to ever pull on the famous black and white stripes and most of his goals were breathtakingly brilliant.
I can hardly do an article these days without mentioning Newcastle’s man of the moment, Alexander Isak.
Our very own Rolls Royce has now banged in 50 league goals in only 77 games for United.
When, not if, Ice Cold Alex signs a new extended contract, I don’t believe it will be long before he’s up there with the greats in the ‘100 club’ for league goals.
