Newcastle vs West Ham – Match preview and team news

Form

Newcastle: LLWWW

After a five-game winless run in the Premier League, Newcastle have bounced back to reignite their season. The Magpies eliminated Chelsea from the Carabao Cup to move into the competition’s quarter-finals, before beating Arsenal and Nottingham Forest in successive games.

Alexander Isak has found his form with goals in each of his last four appearances and the Swedish striker was on target again for the national team during the international break.

Newcastle will be without Dan Burn, who is suspended, but Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson are nearing first-team returns. Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles and Emil Krafth remain out with Eddie Howe light defensively.

West Ham: WLWLD

West Ham have endured a difficult start to the season with the Julen Lopetegui era yet to get up and running. The Hammers were held to a goalless draw at Everton before the international break, a result that leaves them 14th in the Premier League with just three wins from their opening 11 games.

A poor record on the road spells trouble for West Ham, who have won just once in their last eight Premier League away games. Their last two trips away from the London Stadium have ended in heavy defeats at Tottenham and Nottingham Forest.

Summer signing Niclas Fullkrug remains out with an ongoing Achilles issue, while Mohammed Kudus serves the fourth game of his five-match ban for a red card at Spurs. Edson Alvarez is back, however, after his own suspension.

Last Meeting

Newcastle 4-3 West Ham, Premier League, 30th March 2024

Newcastle staged a stunning fightback to beat West Ham in a seven-goal thriller the last time the teams met. In one of the games of the Premier League campaign, Harvey Barnes came off the bench to score twice late on – including a 90th minute winner – to seal the points.

West Ham had been in control of the contest and led 3-1 with 77 minutes gone, after goals from Michail Antonio, Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen had cancelled out Alexander Isak’s early opener for Newcastle. Isak’s second gave Newcastle hope, before Barnes struck twice in the closing stages to turn the game around.
