Manchester United’s newest signing Patrick Dorgu grew up a Chelsea fan.

The 20 year old was signed from Lecce in January for a €35 million deal.

The wing-back made his debut last night in United’s last-ditch 2-1 win over Leicester City in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

The Dane was taken off at half-time but he can consider himself unlucky as he was the team’s rare bright spark in a dull first half showing.

He was interestingly selected at right wing-back despite many assuming he would start on the left to allow either Diogo Dalot or Noussair Mazraoui to start on their more natural right hand side.

On signing for the club, Dorgu stated that “it feels amazing to be part of the family. I’m very excited to get going. I have heard about the incredible support and I’m happy to be one of the players of United now.”

“It’s a huge club. It’s the biggest club in England and I’m really looking forward to working with the new manager [Ruben Amorim] and I feel the system suits me really well. So I’m excited to be here.”

However, The Daily Mail reports that in an interview last year, Dorgu revealed that his loyalties did not lie with United when he was a youngster.

“I’ve been a Chelsea fan for many years, so obviously it’s a dream.”

He did qualify the statement though by claiming, “this doesn’t mean I can’t move to other teams in the Premier League,” and this proved to be the case.

United fans will not be worried too much by this admission from Dorgu as some of the club’s greatest players grew up rooting for different teams.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was famously a Liverpool fan growing up in Norway and Roy Keane was a Tottenham Hotspur supporter as a boy in Ireland.

Dorgu will hope to build on a promising first display when United travel to North London to take on Spurs in eight days.
