Hoffenheim TSG have signed Rennes centre-back Leo Østigård (25), both clubs have announced. The 25-year-old centre-back has signed a three-year contract with Les Rouge et Noir in a €7m move from Napoli. Yet he is already on his way out after only six months in Brittany, following in the footsteps of Rennes summer signing the likes of Jota, Albert Gronbaek, Glen Kamara and Henrik Meister. Østigård has struggled to find his level at Rennes and was often found wanting.
Østigård looked to have paid the price of Habib Beye’s appointment as Rennes’ head coach. The former Newcastle United manager benched the Norwegian international centre-back for his debut on Sunday against Strasbourg. When winter signing Lilian Brassier could not carry on against the Alsatians, Beye turned to Mikayil Faye. As Arthur Theate joined Eintracht Frankfurt on a permanent basis, Rennes could send another player on loan for a deadline-day move. He will wear the No. 4 jersey with Hoffenheim.
