Orlando City SC set Inter&Co Stadium alight after crushing Atlanta United FC 3-0 and another milestone being claimed in club history. The win, aside from confirming the Lions' unbeaten run, also found its way into history books as the fourth game in a row in which the team did not surrender a goal, ending the previous streak for minutes not scored against.
With the victory, Orlando stood at 16 points in the Eastern Conference standings, extending the streak of a team which is now unbeaten for seven games.
The stalemate was eventually broken by Colombian forward Luis Muriel, who did not fail when the referee pointed to spot following a review on the VAR. In the 42nd minute, Muriel slotted the ball home at the bottom right corner with all composure as he sent Brad Guzan the wrong way. It was Muriel's fourth goal of the season.
In the second half, Alex Freeman showed that defenders can also contribute some noise during the attack. Nine minutes into the match, after a beautiful build-up by Marco Pasalic, Freeman broke into the box and drove a shot into the bottom left corner, doubling the home side's lead and further increasing the confidence of the team.
And if Pasalic has also excelled as playmaker, he determined it was time to put his name on the scoresheet. Picking up a loose ball after a clearance by the defense, the forward waited awhile, guided it home, centered himself, and kicked a cannon from outside the box to seal the 3-0 win.
Orlando City defensive solidity was not an accident. After a flawless performance at Inter&Co Stadium, the team broke its own franchise record for uninterrupted minutes without a score from an opponent. The previous record of 364 minutes lasted for only 19 minutes at the start of the game and now the franchise record is at 436 minutes without conceding a goal.
Against Atlanta United in the game, Orlando City in front of the goal defended three shots and ensured that goalkeeper Pedro Gallese had no solitary save to make. The defensive effort showed a team that was disciplined, focused, and totally committed.
