Premier League clubs are set to revisit the idea of closing the summer transfer window before the season starts, but internal resistance could stall the proposal again.

Premier League clubs will meet on Thursday to discuss the possibility of closing this summer’s transfer window on 14 August, two days before the 2025–26 season kicks off, a return to a previously trialled policy that was started in 2018 and abandoned after 2019.

The current window is scheduled to run from 12 June to 29 August, aligning with the majority of Europe’s major leagues.

The proposal, which emerged from a meeting of sporting directors last month, reflects a growing desire, again, among football heads to give managers a settled squad before the season starts.

A vote on the change is on the agenda, but it is far from guaranteed to take place. League rules require a super-majority of 14 clubs in favour for the motion to pass, and if early discussions between owners and executives indicate a lack of support, the Telegraph report the proposal may not even reach the voting stage.

The core of the objections remain unchanged from when the idea was last tried: without continental alignment, closing the Premier League window early could leave English clubs vulnerable to late-window moves, unable to buy while still at risk of losing key players to European rivals or Saudi teams.
