The 30-year-old has received a lot of criticism over the years, especially during Man Utd’s moments of struggle. But he was directly involved in all three of Man Utd’s goals as they beat Leicester City on Sunday.
He has now been directly involved in 112 Premier League goals for Man Utd, the 10th-most for the club. Since Fernandes’ debut for Man Utd in February 2020, only Kevin De Bruyne (90) has recorded more assists across all competitions for a side in Europe’s top five leagues than the Portuguese midfielder’s 80.
Fernandes is one of three Man Utd players in our Team of the Week for Gameweek 29, with Brentford the only other club to boast multiple representatives.
We’ve used our Squawka Score to determine the 11 picks, based on the statistical leaders for metrics relevant to their positions. And as ever, we’ve thrown an honourable mention XI for good measure.
There were just three clean sheets in the Premier League this weekend, and Bernd Leno kept one of them. The German helped his Fulham side shut out Tottenham Hotspur to secure a 2-0 victory, making four saves, three of those coming from shots inside the box. Leno also prevented 0.44 goals, among the best in the Premier League this weekend.
Honourable mention: Mark Flekken (79%)
Jurrien Timber was solid in Arsenal‘s 1-0 win over Chelsea on Sunday, having no real issues in dealing with the Blues’ left-hand side. The Dutchman made two interceptions retaining possession and won one tackle, while also winning four aerial duels. Timber made three clearances and was part of a defence to face just two shots on target. At the other end of the pitch, Timber had four touches in the opposition box and completed six passes into the final third.
Honourable mention: Jake O’Brien (70%)
Although Tottenham conceded two goals in their defeat to Fulham, Cristian Romero scored well at the weekend. And that’s because he came off when the game was still goalless. During his 68 minutes on the pitch, Romero made one interception in his own box and seven clearances, doing all he could to minimise Fulham’s attacking threat. The Argentine also won possession three times in the defensive third.
Honourable mention: Nikola Milenkovic (69%)
What a showing Ayden Heaven had at centre-back for Man Utd in their 0-3 win over Leicester. It was his first Premier League start for the club since moving from Arsenal in the winter transfer window. But the teenager played beyond his years. Heaven made one last-man tackle and blocked thee shots to keep Leicester out, won three tackles, made three clearances. He also boasted a retention rate of 90.74% and won 85.71% of his ground duels. Unfortunately his game came to a premature end due to injury, but Man Utd fans will like what they saw.
Honourable mention: Gabriel (68%)
LB: Diogo Dalot (Man Utd)
Ruben Amorim’s left-wing-back, Diogo Dalot recorded an intentional assist in Man Utd’s win over Leicester, setting up Bruno Fernandes for the third. Attack-minded, Dalot completed two take-ons and completed 50% of his attempted crosses from open play, which is a good success rate. He also blocked one cross, made three clearances and won four aerial duels.
Honourable mention: Antonee Robinson (69%)
Bruno Fernandes could have beaten Leicester on his own. The Man Utd captain ran the show at the King Power Stadium, with one goal and two assists. Sitting at the base of Man Utd’s midfield, Fernandes won three tackles and possession nine times in the middle third — the joint-most of any midfielder in the Premier League this weekend. He also made 16 ball recoveries, more than any other Premier League midfielder, and made 12 accurate forward passes.
Honourable mention: Idrissa Gueye (70%)

The Cameroonian also completed two crosses, had a 100% success rate in his take-ons and had one shot on target.
Honourable mention: Gabriel Martinelli (68%)
Omar Marmoush started Manchester City‘s draw with Brighton and Hove Albion just behind the striker, and scored their second goal. He also won the penalty for Man City’s opener. Overall, Marmoush created two big chances, had six touches in the opposition box and completed 15 passes in the final third.
Honourable mention: Morgan Gibbs-White (69%)
Having played predominantly through the middle since joining Everton, Carlos Alcaraz was moved to the left for their 1-1 draw with West Ham United. And the 22-year-old played well. He also won four aerial duels boasted 0.9 non-penalty Expected Goals and had two touches in the opposition box.
