Despite regularly earning praise after seven strong starts, Wolfsburg keeper Marius Müller will be returning to the bench against Augsburg this weekend. This was confirmed by VfL head coach Ralph Hasenhüttl at Thursday’s press conference. Kamil Grabara has recovered sufficiently from his thigh injury to reprise his role as Hasenhüttl’s No. 1 in their next Bundesliga match.
The story of Müller – who became a Bundesliga rookie at the age of 31 – certainly serves as a sensational tale. The man tasked with leading Germany’s green company team has nevertheless been consistent about the fact that Grabara’s starting place was not in jeopardy. Hasenhüttl also spoke on the starting prospects of Grabara’s Polish teammate Jakub Kaminski and VfL captain Maximilian Arnold at the presser.
In last week’s league fixture against St. Pauli, Kaminski proved a true breath of fresh air off the bench in a 27-minute-relief-shift. Kaminski ultimately drew the penalty that enabled Mohamed Amoura to equalise from the spot. Arnold – who had been more than adequately replaced on a like-for-like positional basis by Mattias Svanberg in recent weeks – also looked good off the bench in a 45-minute-shift last weekend.
“Max [Arnold] is looking good and is fully fit,” Hasenhüttl said. “Kamil has trained with the team all week and has also put in extra shifts. There were no adverse reactions. Things are looking very good for the weekend.
“It was very important that [despite outgoing transfer links] we kept Kuba [Kaminski] here this winter,” Hasenhüttl added of the Pole who can earn a start on either flank as both a fullback or a winger. “With his speed and energy, he can cause a lot of danger.
“It could be the case that he plays more of a role for us than he has recently,” Hasenhüttl concluded whilst discussing the possibility of a Kaminski start.
