Real Madrid are on the verge of extending the contract of young defender Raul Asencio.
According to Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Los Blancos are close to finalising an agreement over a new long-term deal for Asencio, whose current contract expires in 2026.
Asencio has seized his opportunity after being promoted from Castilla to the first team this season to deal with the injury crisis.
The Spaniard has become a pivotal figure in Real’s backline with his brilliant performances across all competitions.
Asencio also produced standout performances against Manchester City and Atletico Madrid in the Champions League knockout stage, helping Los Blancos progress to the quarter-finals.
He has played in 29 games for Los Blancos this term and started in 11 of the last 12 matches.
Asencio’s staggering rise to prominence has also earned him a maiden senior team call-up to the Spanish national team.
He is set to feature in the Nations League quarter-finals against the Netherlands this week.
Asencio is an archetypal modern-day centre-back who excels on and off the ball. His 97 percent accuracy further highlights his immaculate passing range.
He is also a tenacious defender with quick anticipation, willing to put his body on the line in dire situations.
It will be intriguing to see whether Asencio’s contract extension will affect Madrid’s plans to recruit a new central defender this summer.
They have reportedly identified Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen and Arsenal’s William Saliba as potential defensive targets.
