Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois may reconsider his decision to step away from international duties with the Belgium national team.
It must be noted that the shot-stopper announced his departure from the national squad in August, citing disagreements with coach Domenico Tedesco. However, recent developments suggest he could be open to making a return.
The Real Madrid star has enjoyed a stellar international career, earning 102 caps for Belgium. Despite his contributions, Courtois missed the last European Championship due to his decision to distance himself from the national team.
While his statement last year seemed definitive, he has hinted at the possibility of playing again, even expressing interest in featuring in the World Cup.
“Obviously I hope to play another game, to say goodbye properly or to play again. I would love to play in the World Cup, but we’ll see what happens. It’s not that easy,” the keeper told CNN (h/t Mundo Deportivo).
Efforts to bring Courtois back into the fold were evident in November when Peter Willems, Belgium’s sporting director, travelled to Madrid.

Willems reportedly met with the goalkeeper to gauge his willingness to return. Although Courtois acknowledged the meeting, his decision remains tied to his stance on Tedesco’s leadership.
The conflict between Courtois and Tedesco originated in June 2023 during an international break. Courtois was unhappy with Tedesco’s decision to hand the captain’s armband to Romelu Lukaku in Kevin De Bruyne’s absence.
Following the disagreement, Courtois left the training camp, a move that deepened the rift between the player and the coach.
In his earlier statement, Courtois admitted that he had reflected on the situation extensively before deciding not to play under Tedesco’s management.
He expressed that the lack of trust between them would prevent a positive working relationship within the team.
“Regrettably, following the events with the coach and after much reflection, I have decided not to return to the Belgian national team under his direction. In this matter, I accept my share of responsibility.
“However, looking ahead, my lack of confidence in him would not contribute to maintaining the necessary climate of cordiality,” he added.
Despite this, his recent comments indicate a willingness to reconsider, provided certain conditions are met.
