Eder Militao’s season-ending injury last week has left Real Madrid in a spot of bother defensively.

Already marred with the departure of Nacho Fernandez and David Alaba’s seemingly endless stint on the sidelines, Los Blancos have been pressed for resources in the department from the beginning of the season.

The Brazilian’s setback leaves the manager with just one senior centre-back option in the squad, especially given that he does not count on Jesus Vallejo.

An option for January

As relayed in a recent update by Manu Amor, Real Madrid see Al-Nassr defender Aymeric Laporte to be the best-placed candidate to reinforce the defensive line in January if needed.

While some voices in the board feel that a new signing is not required, those who are in favour of a new reinforcement see the former Manchester City star to be ideal for a plethora of reasons.

For starters, they see him to be a player who can provide a high level of defensive cover from day one, especially given how he is still active for the Spanish national team. His being left-footed only strengthens his case.

He also brings experience to the table having won both the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League in the past. His Spanish citizenship is a third vital factor that plays in his favour.

Concurrently, however, the Spanish journalist relays that Real Madrid know it will not be easy to snatch the player from Al-Nassr, who do not want to let go of their star man.

Los Blancos cannot come remotely close to the wages the Saudi Arabian side pay him, and the chance that Cristiano Ronaldo’s side will let one of their most important players leave on a six-month loan is very low.

The Merengues will thus monitor Laporte in the ongoing international break before deciding whether or not to establish concrete interest and formal contacts. The option is far from ruled out.
