Arsenal are seeking a third successive victory in Spain, something they've never previously achieved, while Real Madrid are unbeaten in six home matches against Premier League opposition.

Real Madrid vs Arsenal Preview

Last Tuesday, the Emirates Stadium hosted its 515th men's senior first team match and, almost unanimously, everyone agrees it was the venue's most-famous night. Arsenal hammered Real Madrid 3-0 in North London, leaving those in attendance jubilant but in shock in equal measure. Declan Rice scored not one but two astonishing free-kicks a mere 12 minutes apart, before Mikel Merino lashed home a spectacular third. So, can Mikel Arteta's team make this advantage count in the Spanish capital, or will they be on the wrong end of yet another Bernabéu remontada?

Real Madrid, quite astonishingly, have won the Champions League six times in the last 11 seasons, despite having only got their hands on this trophy on three occasions in the previous 47 years. However, one thing the record 15-times kings of Europe have never achieved is progressing through a tie after losing the first leg by three goals. If Carlo Ancelotti's fail to make history, their season is in danger of being a total catastrophe.

Despite Sunday's 1-0 win over Alavés, in which Kylian Mbappé was sent off at Mendizorrotza for one of the worst tackles you're ever likely to see, los Blancos remain four points behind Barcelona in La Liga. The pair do clash right at the end of the season at Montjuïc and will also meet at La Cartuja in the Copa del Rey Final in just ten days time; two season-defining fixtures. Nevertheless, a poor fortnight could end los Merengues' hopes of claiming any major silverware from this campaign. First and foremost, can they pull off a jaw-dropping remontada at the Bernabéu?

As for Arsenal, they're seeking to reach only the third Champions League semi-final in their entire history; for context, Real Madrid have contested 33. The Gunners' Premier League title hopes have been over for a little while now, so are primarily focussed on this competition, reflected by the fact Arteta heavily rotated for Saturday's 1-1 draw with Brentford. Gooners everywhere could not have dreamt they'd be taking a three goal advantage to the Bernabéu, but no one is planning for a place in the semis just yet, so can Arsenal get the job done in Madrid?

Real Madrid Team News

It's one in, one out in terms of French midfielders; Eduardo Camavinga's late red card in North London means he is suspended, but Aurélien Tchouaméni can return following a ban of his own. Carlo Ancelotti has a decision to make defensively, considering Éder Militão, Dani Carvajal and Ferland Mendy are all sidelined long-term. The attack-minded Lucas Vázquez could return at right-back, given the aggregate scoreline, thereby also allowing Fede Valverde to move back into midfield.

Meantime, on the other side, only recently fit-again David Alaba was tasked with looking after Bukayo Saka last Tuesday, so will he keep his place, or will Fran García return? Lastly, former Arsenal man Dani Ceballos is back following a muscle injury, but will he be thrown straight into the lineup?

Real Madrid predicted lineup vs Arsenal: (4-3-3): Courtois, Vázquez, Rüdiger, Asencio, Alaba; Valverde, Tchouaméni, Bellingham; Rodrygo, Vinícius, Mbappé.

Real Madrid Player to Watch vs Arsenal

Kylian Mbappé has scored 32 goals this season, while his tally of 55 Champions League goals is only bettered by seven men in history. In this competition, he has netted against 23 different opponents, so can he add Arsenal to that list?

Arsenal Team News

Gabriel, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz are sidelined long-term, but there are other injury concerns. Thomas Partey hobbled off at the weeend, so is a doubt, while his deputy Jorginho was also replaced against Brentford. Meantime, Benjamin White wasn't even in the squad due to a knock, meaning Mikel Arteta could have very limited options at his disposal.

There is optimism that Partey will be fit to play but, if he's not, first leg scorer Mikel Merino will revert back to midfield, with Leandro Trossard leading the line. Jurriën Timber, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Merino, Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard will all be back, after coming off the bench on Saturday.

Arsenal Player to Watch vs Real Madrid

Bukayo Saka has scored eight goals in 15 Champions League appearances to date but, if he is able to find the net at the Bernabéu, it would surely be the best of the lot.

Real Madrid vs Arsenal Prediction

Despite boasting a three-goal advantage, no one is expecting a straight-forward evening for Arsenal. Everyone tuning in should do so expecting goals, but we are backing the Gunners to, just about, do enough to oust Real Madrid and reach the semi-finals: Real Madrid 2-1 Arsenal.
