Ahead of the clash, we’ve picked our Real Madrid and Barcelona Combined XI.

Real Madrid vs Barcelona – El Clásico Combined XI

Goalkeeper: Thibaut Courtois – Real Madrid

Thibaut Courtois earns the nod in goal, a straightforward selection given Barcelona remain without Marc-André ter Stegen through injury.

One of the best La Liga goalkeepers of the modern era, Courtois has shone during spells on both sides of the Madrid divide. A three-time winner of the Zamora Trophy, he has been a crucial part of three La Liga titles and two Champions League triumphs at the Bernabeu.

Iconic Performances – The night Ronaldinho received a standing ovation from the Bernabeu

Right-back: Jules Kounde – Barcelona

Injury again makes this a simple selection with Dani Carvajal ruled out for the season at Real Madrid.

Jules Kounde has been a dependable defensive option for Barcelona. The Frenchman is progressive in his passing and carries the ball confidently forward, while he ranks second across Europe’s top five leagues for dribblers tackled this season. He has a huge role tonight, up against Vinicius Junior.

Centre-back: Pau Cubarsi – Barcelona

La Masia continues to produce gems like no institution in world football. Pau Cubrasi has become a regular in the Barcelona side as a teenager, the latest from a talent factory that has shown few signs of slowing.

The 17-year-old leads La Liga for pass accuracy this season and ranks among the league’s top players for passes into the final third and progressive passing distance. In his first Clásico, he helped keep Real Madrid scoreless.

Centre-back: Antonio Rudiger – Real Madrid

Antonio Rudiger has matured into one of world football’s best centre-backs at Real Madrid. His transfer from Chelsea to Spain has elevated his game and he is an irreplaceable presence at the heart of the club’s backline.

A crucial part of the club’s La Liga and Champions League success last season, Rudiger has been a crucial presence as Real Madrid have combated the loss of several defensive figures.

Left-back: Alejandro Balde – Barcelona

Another homegrown gem, Alejandro Balde is evolving into a brilliant option at Barcelona. The 21-year-old ranks in the top six percent of full-backs across Europe for progressive carries, successful take-ons and progressive passes received over the last 12 months.

Midfield: Jude Bellingham – Real Madrid

Jude Bellingham has cemented his place among Europe’s top players since signing for Real Madrid.

A marauding midfield force, he picked up the La Liga Player of the Season award last term after helping Carlo Ancelotti’s side to title success. The definition of a ‘clutch’ player, he netted stoppage-time winners in two El Clásico contests last season.

Midfield: Federico Valverde – Real Madrid

Arguably the first name on the Real Madrid team sheet. Federico Valverde might just be the most well-rounded midfielder in world football right now. With a tireless engine, goal threat and never-say-die attitude, Valverde will be a driving force in Real Madrid’s challenge.

Midfield: Raphinha – Barcelona

Raphinha’s renaissance is one of the stories of the European season so far.

He has 17 goals and 10 assists in 26 appearances across all competitions and has captained a Barcelona side he was expected to depart in the summer. With work-rate and wizardry in the final third, he’s been transformed from an under-appreciated asset into one of Europe’s most effective players.

Right-wing: Lamine Yamal – Barcelona

There have been plenty of boy wonders in modern football but have any had quite the impact of Lamine Yamal? Still just 17, there’s an argument that Yamal is already one of world football’s finest talents. He has 19 goals and assists in 22 appearances this season and leads La Liga for goals created. Precocious does not do his arrival justice.

Left-wing: Vinicius Junior – Real Madrid

Vinicius Junior believes he is the best footballer in the world right now and it is difficult to argue against the brilliant Brazilian. Few footballers are as capable of game-altering moments and Vinicius took home FIFA’s The Best Men’s Player for 2024. After a hat-trick in last season’s Supercopa final, he will be keen to decide another El Clásico with silverware at stake.

Forward: Robert Lewandowski – Barcelona

Kylian Mbappe might be the biggest natural talent in the game but the Frenchman’s form does not deserve inclusion over the red-hot Robert Lewandowski

Lewandowski has shown no sign of slowing down this season, scoring 25 goals in 26 games including a brace against Real Madrid earlier in the season. The 36-year-old is La Liga’s leading scorer this season.
