A truly epic show with a cast of more than 50 delivers an inspiring encapsulation of David Peace’s novel about a football manager who transformed Liverpool Football Club, the late great Bill Shankly.
Adapted for the stage by Phillip Breen, Red Or Dead is everything you’d want it to be and more. Funny, emotional, and engrossing, every single second was worth your full attention.
With songs from the famous Spion Kop including two spine-tingling renditions of You’ll Never Walk Alone, it’s as entertaining and is it informative with nods towards famous stories from yesteryear, the importance of stepping out onto the hallowed Anfield pitch and the Boot Room tales.

Charting the journey from Shankly’s appointment, family life, and relationship with Manchester United to on-the-pitch matters such as promotion, the first-division title, eventual FA Cup glory and success in Europe all sprinkled with the Scotsman’s overriding belief of what it meant to be a Liverpool fan and represent our club.
Peter Mullan’s performance as Shankly is truly astonishingly good, with the likeness of a dead ringer, the voice uncanny and it’s clear to see the honour with which he has in playing the role.
But, man, woman and child, every single person on that stage played a huge part in bringing together a quite brilliant portrayal of the life of one of the most important figures in our rich history.
The end was greeted with a fitting standing ovation, but in truth, most didn’t want it to end – much like Shankly’s reign itself.
