This week, the Anfield Index community mourns the loss of a truly exceptional individual, Jan Gorski-Mescir, whose profound contributions to our discussions and understanding of Liverpool FC have left an indelible mark on all of us. Jan passed away last Tuesday, and as we reflect on his life, we find ourselves both heartbroken and immensely grateful for the time and wisdom he shared with us.
Jan was not just a colleague but a cherished member of the Anfield Index family. Known for his remarkable versatility and intellect, Jan excelled in everything he put his mind to—from music and art to profound discussions about football and life. His talents were boundless, and his ability to engage and inspire those around him was truly special.
“Jan was one of those people that if you didn’t know him, you might be annoyed by him because he was just incredibly talented,” remembered Dave Hendrick on our Daily Red podcast. This sentiment captures the essence of Jan’s capability and spirited approach to life.
A revered storyteller, Jan hosted the beloved “Jumpers for Goalposts” podcast, where he delved into the rich history of Liverpool FC and its intertwining with the culture of the city. These podcasts are a treasure trove of knowledge and emotion, crafted with the utmost care and respect for the subject. Dave recalls, “Jan was a storyteller… and they are, in my opinion, the best collective of podcasts in the Liverpool sphere.”
His dedication to podcasting was matched by his love for the Reds and his broader interests, which included a fierce opposition to fascism—a passion undoubtedly influenced by his family’s history during World War II. Jan’s life was a vivid tapestry of experiences, beliefs, and relationships that shaped him into the man we so admired.
Jan’s move to France with his amazing partner, Rae, marked a new chapter in his life, one filled with hope, love, and continuous learning. Dave shares, “Jan many times credited Rae with really saving him from a place where he hadn’t been very happy… life just made more sense to him.” This move was symbolic of Jan’s capacity for change and growth.
Reflecting on his impact, Dave notes, “He had time for everybody… If you want to talk about the Reds, music, politics, or arts, Jan would wear the ear off you talking about those subjects.” His encyclopedic knowledge and enthusiasm made him a central figure in our community, always ready to share, teach, and engage.
As we say goodbye to Jan, we remember not just the knowledge he imparted, but the warmth and kindness he brought into our lives. His legacy at Anfield Index and within the broader Liverpool community will continue to resonate through the podcasts he left behind and the stories he told.
As Dave suggested, “When you raise the first one, just raise it to Jan.” And come May, when Virgil lifts that trophy, we’ll know it’s also for Jan, a true Red who taught us so much about passion, resilience, and the deep-rooted spirit of Liverpool FC.
Rest well, Jan. You will be profoundly missed, but your lessons and your laughter will forever be part of Anfield Index.
A selection of podcasts including Jumpers For Goalposts and Scouser Tommies featuring Jan will be released uncut and advert-free on Anfield Index and AI:PRO over the next few days and weeks – please do check them out!
