Italian giants Roma and Juventus have each suffered a setback in the race for the Champions League places after an entertaining 1-1 draw in the capital.
Scorers: Shomurodov 49'; Locatelli 40'
With Igor Tudor in search of consecutive wins since taking charge, and Claudio Ranieri looking to remain in hot form of late, neither side were able to strike a killer blow come full-time.
It came as no surprise that the pair of giants took a little while to get started in the Italian capital tonight given what was at stake.
Neither Roma nor Juventus were justifiably willing to surrender any big moments in the opening exchanges, but sure enough, the match came alive at Stadio Olimpico within 30 minutes as both clubs began to turn the screw with contrasting dynamics.
First, it was Roma who looked more likely to score despite Juve boasting up to 80% of the ball while managing a smattering of chances, with Pierre Kalulu doing incredibly well to track back and block Bryan Cristante's effort which looked sure to cross the line.
In the action following, Angeliño's effort on the volley was blocked by Juve once again as alarm bells began to ring.
Juve would march back up the other end immediately after Timothy Weah picked out Nicolás González before the Argentine's goal-bound header was turned aside by a finger-tip save from Mile Svilar.
Cristante would be involved once again ten minutes later when he nearly turned provider for Stephan El Shaarawy with a neat cross, only for the Savona-born forward to watch his header strike the post and bounce clear.
Igor Tudor's men finally netted a breakthrough goal in the 40th minute when Manuel Locatelli did exceptionally well to beat Svilar from range on the volley after Mats Hummels' attempted clear could only land in the path of the former Sassuolo man, who finally broke his goalscoring duck this season.
Roma was not to be denied passage to an equaliser for long, however, when substitute Eldor Shomurodov guided home the rebound from Evan Ndicka's initial header to restore parity four minutes after the restart.
The Giallorossi looked reinvigorated after Shomurodov's strike and would shake things up with a pair of changes in the 61st minute, with Lucas Gourna-Douath and Leandro Paredes replacing El Shaarawy and Cristante.
Tudor would counter with a big triple change of his own in the 68th minute when he introduced Randal Kolo Muani, Teun Koopmeiners, and Andrea Cambiaso.
Both managers reshuffled the deck further as the final 15 minutes loomed, but despite late search efforts to find a match-winner, it would be a point-a-piece in Rome; a result that moves Juve level on points with Bologna in 4th, who are set to clash with Napoli tomorrow.
Unfortunately for Roma, their winning run now comes to an end, and they now trail capital rival Lazio by two points after their earlier win over Atalanta.
