Inter Milan kept their faint Serie A Femminile title hopes alive with a dramatic win against leaders Juventus. Meanwhile, reigning champions Roma demonstrated that they are not willing to let their title go without a fight in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Fiorentina.

With the league now on pause for the international break, here’s a look at last weekend’s Serie A Femminile playoff action.

Poule Scudetto

Roma 2-0 Fiorentina

Roma’s Marta Pandini required just five minutes to break the deadlock against Fiorentina. The 27-year-old shimmied to work the space to curl a left-foot shot out of Cecilie Fiskerstrand’s reach. Moeka Minami doubled Roma’s advantage before the break, tapping the ball home after Fiskerstrand parried Valentina Giacinti’s deft shot.

Fiorentina were unable to produce a response in the second period, leaving them six points adrift of third-placed Roma in the battle for European qualification. Meanwhile, the Giallorosse closed the gap to Juventus to eight points, although that is still a considerable gap with just four matches left to play.

Inter 3-2 Juventus

Inter staged a late fightback to snatch maximum points from Sunday’s home clash against Juventus. The visitors went into the interval with a narrow lead after Chiara Beccari scored on the stroke of half time. The 20-year-old helped the ball on its way into the net from Abi Brighton’s inswinging free-kick.

Inter restored parity through half-time substitute Martina Tomaselli. Juventus goalkeeper Pauline Peyraud-Magnin thought she had saved Tomaselli’s shot with her legs, but the backspin took the ball over the line. The hosts remained level until the 88th minute when Sofia Cantore looked to have won the game with her 10th league goal of the season.

However, Inter quickly won a penalty after Brighton was penalised for her challenge in the box. Tessa Wullaert kept her cool to slot the ball under Peyraud-Magnin’s dive to score Inter’s second equaliser of the game. As it proved, there was still time for the home side to complete a sensational turnaround through Elisa Polli. The forward tapped the ball in from close range after Haley Bugeja’s shot was pushed across the face of goal. The win moved Inter to within seven points of the leaders, keeping their title hopes alive even if they require something special in the final four rounds.

Napoli 0-2 Como

Como extended their unbeaten run to four matches with a relatively comfortable win over Napoli. Zara Kramžar headed the ball home from Liucija Vaitukaitytė’s dangerous cross to open the scoring just before the half-hour mark.

Vaitukaitytė registered another assist in the 64th minute, knocking the ball into Alex Kerr’s path before the American forward moved away from her marker to fire in at the near post. The win keeps sixth-laced Como three points clear of Lazio, while the hosts remain one point ahead of basement side Sampdoria.

Sampdoria 2-5 Sassuolo

Sampdoria were unable to take advantage of Napoli’s defeat, as they fell to a heavy loss in their home meeting with Sassuolo. Gina Chmielinski got Sassuolo up and running with a stunning effort from outside the box. Lana Clelland powered home a header to give the visitors a two-goal lead at the break.

The hosts then produced a response in the opening stages of the second period, with Sara Baldi rifling the ball in off the underside of the crossbar to halve the deficit.

Sampdoria were unable to build upon Baldi’s second league goal of the season. In fact, Sassuolo moved through the gears to take the game away from their opponents.

Kassandra Missipo headed in from Clelland’s cross before the latter netted her second goal of the game to take Sassuolo’s tally to four. Elena Dhont then got in on the act to make it 5-1 to the visitors. Nicole Arcangeli grabbed a late consolation, but it did little to dampen Sassuolo’s mood as they celebrated a resounding victory.
