The signing of Ben Brereton Diaz could give Sheffield United a real advantage in the Championship title race.
Sheffield United mean business in the January transfer window.
As expected, the Blades find themselves in the Championship title race, as they look to make an immediate return to the Premier League after last season's relegation.
Chris Wilder's side currently battle at the top end of the table with the likes of Leeds United, Burnley and Sunderland, but it looks as though the Blades will not just settle for promotion, they want to win the title, moving back top with a Tuesday night win versus Swansea City - a game in which new signing, Ben Brereton Diaz, returned to the matchday squad.
Their current squad is full of talent all over the pitch, but the January transfer window is here, meaning they have the opportunity to strengthen their options even further.
On Monday, they did exactly that, as Sheffield United announced the return of Brereton Diaz on loan, and this time there is an option to make the deal permanent in the summer.
Chris Wilder is very familiar with the Chile international, and if he can find the same form as he did last season under Wilder, he can be a real threat and potentially help the Blades lift the Championship title come the end of the season.
It is no secret that Brereton Diaz has struggled in the Premier League at Southampton this season, having made just four league starts and failing to find the back of the net. However, it was only less than a year ago that the striker contributed to seven goals in 14 Premier League starts.
Of course, that tally of seven goal contributions was under Wilder at Sheffield United, and frankly it was a huge achievement to score that many, given that the Blades were suffering at the bottom of the table on a worryingly low points tally.
Brereton Diaz's form at Bramall Lane last season will excite the Sheffield United faithful in terms of what is to come over the next few months.
Both the Blades fans and Brereton Diaz himself will be desperate to see him get back to his goalscoring ways, and a Sheffield United team fighting for the Championship title could be the perfect place to do so.
Although the forward has never earned promotion from the Championship, his goal record in the division became outstanding towards the end of his Blackburn spell.
Brereton Diaz scored 36 goals across two seasons for Blackburn, and that was with arguably far less creative service than what he will receive over the next few months.
Sheffield United already have a number of talented creators in their squad, meaning Brereton Diaz is likely to get a huge number of opportunities in front of goal.
The likes of Harrison Burrows, Callum O'Hare, Jesurun Rak-Sakyi and Gustavo Hamer all have the ability to offer the striker chance after chance with their top quality service.
If Brereton Diaz can score goals in a Sheffield United side that were simply awaiting their impending relegation, he can certainly find the back of the net in a Sheffield United side destined for promotion.
Wilder evidently knows how to play to the forward's strengths, and if he can regain his form, he will give Sheffield United a major boost in their quest for promotion and potentially even see them edge towards the title.
