We asked our Sheffield United fan pundit for his thoughts after they were linked with a move for Jonjoe Kenny
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...
Sheffield United have been told to sign Jonjoe Kenny from Hertha Berlin as competition for Alfie Gilchrist in a bid to help the club return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
Alan Nixon recently reported via his Patreon that the Blades were eyeing up a bargain deal for former Everton defender Kenny, with his contract at Hertha Berlin set to expire at the end of the season.
Kenny departed Everton in the summer of 2022 and is into his third season with Hertha Berlin, where he's become a key player, but if Sheffield United get their way, he could be back in England this month.
With the 27-year-old's contract set to expire at the end of the season, Sheffield United have been urged to get a deal over the line as they look to bolster their squad with Premier League promotion in mind.
We asked our Sheffield United fan pundit, Jimmy - Blades Ramble, whether he was in favour of signing former Everton man Kenny, and it's clear that he feels the 27-year-old would be a good addition.
Speaking to Football League World, Jimmy said: "I think this is a really smart deal for the club to be honest.
“We’re not screaming for a right-back, we’ve got Alfie Gilchrist there, who is doing a really good job, and Femi Seriki, who is a different type of player and offers us something different at right-back, but Alfie Gilchrist can also move across into centre-back we’re short.
“Jonjoe Kenny with 50 Premier League appearances and who has played nearly every game for Hertha Berlin this season, he’s got good pedigree, good experience and I think he’s a solid option at 27 for a nominal fee because he’s out of contract at the end of the season.
“It’s an absolute no-brainer for us to be honest, not just to increase our numbers, but he’ll impact the first-team too, which is what we need to do this window.”
With a wealth of experience both in the Premier League and in Europe, Kenny would be a shrewd signing who is capable of adding a lot to the Sheffield United squad.
It also must be remembered that Gilchrist is on loan from Chelsea, so he'll likely be returning to his parent club in the summer, and it's important that they have a replacement for him.
If Sheffield United wait until the summer to sign Kenny when he's available on a free transfer, then they risk losing him, so paying a cut-price fee to sign him this month appears to be very good business.
There shouldn't be any doubts over his ability to play in the Championship, or even the Premier League, if the Blades win promotion, and a shrewd deal like this could go a long way to helping Chris Wilder's side win promotion.
