Sheffield Wednesday have been urged to keep Djeidi Gassama
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...
With a summer of uncertainty and potential change on the horizon, there is likely to be various outgoings at Sheffield Wednesday in the upcoming transfer window.
Should they avoid defeat at Watford on the final day of the season, the Owls will achieve a 12th-place finish, which would be their best effort since the play-off campaigns of 2016 and 2017.
Despite what looks like a positive, productive season on the surface, confusion continues to circle around the stands of Hillsborough.
Manager Danny Röhl hasn’t been shy about his desire to pursue pastures new, at least whilst Dejphon Chansiri’s infamous reign as owner continues.
As a result, with the contracts of numerous senior players dwindling down, Wednesday must keep the quality they have if they are to build next term.
We asked our Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit, Patrick McKenna, the Owls star he’d not like to lose this summer.
Speaking to Football League World, Patrick stated: “A player I really don't want to lose this summer would be Djeidi Gassama. He is one of the players at the club who has the potential to be a valuable asset in the future for a good amount of money, and we can't be in the situation where we let him slip through our fingers.
“For next season, the squad as it's looking right now will be quite threadbare. He has emerged this season as a key player, he has come on leaps and bounds, and I think the trajectory for him will continue upwards.
“So next season, I think he's going to be even better and if we have him as a regular in the team, that will certainly be a massive positive. We need to keep him and next season, have him as a key player. I'd also be keen this summer to tie him down to a new contract. So as the season goes on, there won’t be a worry about if we are going to lose him for free.
“Ultimately, I think he's going to be someone we're going to sell on. The reality of being a Championship club is that you need to be able to sell players for good amounts to reinvest back into the club.
“If we keep him now, he'll improve as a player and his value will increase again but he certainly can't slip through our fingers this summer. That would be an absolute nightmare.”
Ranking as the club’s third top scorer this season, the forward has netted seven times in the Championship, trailing only Michael Smith and Josh Windass in that department.
Undoubtedly one of the Owls’ standout operators, Gassama has provided a threat from both flanks over the course of the campaign, highlighting his impressive versatility.
The 21-year-old has built on an impressive first term in English football by doubling his goal tally from last year and at such a young age, should only go on to improve in the forthcoming years.
A footballing education with French champions PSG has served Gassama well, providing him with the springboard to flourish in the budding years of his career.
However, this seemingly endless potential will attract potential suitors from elsewhere and if the current state inside Sheffield Wednesday remains the way it is, the young forward could feel inclined to continue his development elsewhere.
As alluded to by our Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit Patrick, this would be a nightmare scenario for the Owls, who could potentially go on to earn a king’s ransom for the young prospect in future years.
With only one season remaining on his deal at Hillsborough, it isn’t inconceivable for the club face a battle to keep hold of the attacker in the upcoming window.
Time will tell what becomes of Gassama’s future, but one thing is for certain – Sheffield Wednesday would lose a heap of attacking threat, as well as a valuable asset, if the forward does depart this summer.
