Shirt in honour of Franz Beckenbauer at the Allianz Arena | OneFootball

To mark FC Bayern's 125th anniversary, the German record champions are honouring Franz Beckenbauer in a special way. In memory of the ‘Kaiser’, a giant shirt with his name and the legendary shirt number 5 will hang under the roof of the Reds' home ground in the future, clearly visible to all visitors. The tribute to the unique Munich football icon will be on display for the first time at tomorrow's Champions League match against Bayer Leverkusen.

Herbert Hainer, president: "We are delighted that the club is honouring Franz Beckenbauer in this extraordinary way at its Allianz Arena after our members decided at the annual general meeting that his number 5 would be retired. The sporting heart of FC Bayern beats in this stadium, and the club's deep connection to our ‘Kaiser’ should always be on display at matches."

The shirt was installed above the Südkurve of the Allianz Arena following consultation with the fans. It's made up of 32 printed, non-flammable individual pieces of glass fabric and is 15.7 metres high and 10.54 metres wide. This special honour is a first for the German record champions' footballers, although the FC Bayern basketball team has already retired the shirt numbers 6 and 24 to honour the achievements of long-time club idols Steffen Hamann and Demond Greene. Specially made jerseys hang under the roofs of BMW Park and the SAP Garden, the venues of the ‘Red Giants’.

The German record champions' collection to mark FC Bayern's 125th birthday also offered the option of having the anniversary jersey printed with “Beckenbauer” and “5” on the back for the first time. This combination was an absolute top seller as the club experienced record demand.
