Spurs loan watch: La Liga round up

Over the past weekend – the final game week before the first international break of 2025 – there was La Liga action for two Tottenham Hotspur loanees. Alejo Veliz and his RCD Espanyol side faced Mallorca on the road, whilst Bryan Gil and his Girona side hosted Valencia.

How things went over in Spain for two of Spurs' current loanees

As has often been the case, Veliz was named amongst the substitutes for Espanyol. Even more damning, a central midfielder was playing as part of a front two, which can’t have been easy to take for the Spurs loanee, at all.

After a goalless first half, his side took the lead eight minutes into the second half, via an own goal. However, 12 minutes later, Mallorca would equalise. Just as it looked like Espanyol were going to pick up a valuable point on the road, they conceded a penalty deep into stoppage time, and were condemned to a sucker punch 2-1 defeat, as the spot kick was converted after 97 minutes of action.

They can’t really argue at the result, in fairness, having had just two shots all game. Their hosts had 20 shots, and three big chances – more than Espanyol had shots all together. Tough day at the office.

As for Veliz himself, he remained an unused substitute, as he continues to struggle for game time. He has played just 954 minutes of La Liga action this season, which is around 10 and a half full games. Not ideal for his development at all.

This defeat leaves Espanyol in 15th place in La Liga, with 29 points from their 27 games – one point above the bottom three, though with a game in hand.

As for Gil, he missed Girona’s game with an injury. In his absence, they drew 1-1 with Valencia. The visitors took the lead after 58 minutes, but Gil’s side equalised just six minutes later. This leaves them in 13th place in La Liga, with 34 points from their 28 games so far.

Neither player will be away on international duty, so it is a two week wait before they are next potentially in action. In game week 29, Espanyol will host Atletico Madrid, whilst Girona will play away to neighbours Barcelona. Espanyol’s game will take place on Saturday, the 29th of March, whilst Girona will play on Sunday, the 30th of March.
