It is very obvious to see that Tottenham Hotspur need to active in this January transfer window, with a huge number of injuries all over the pitch and the club still in all three cup competitions, (Carabao Cup, FA Cup, and the UEFA Europa League) despite sitting 15th in the Premier League, it is clear they need a number of reinforcements with the amount of games coming thick and fast for the club in the coming weeks.
One player that the club have been linked with, is Brazilian Wolverhampton Wanderers attacking midfielder Matheus Cunha. The 25-year-old has been by far the stand out player for the side from the Black Country so far this season, with ten goals and four assists (along with eleven big chances created) in twenty one games this Premier League campaign. This also comes with his side being one place above the relegation zone in 17th, only being above Ipswich on goal difference.
Cunha, who is primarily a number ten, or attacking midfielder as you might lilke to call it, can play in a number or positions and roles. He can operate on the last line as a number nine, using his pace to run in behind aswell as his very good finishing ability, with his ten goals coming from just 4.63 xG (expected goals.) This means that judging by all the shots he has taken so far, he should have only scored between four and five, but because of his excellent placement and ball striking, he's accumulated more than double that.
He's also very capable of playing out on the left, whether that is as a natural winger or one of the two attacking midfielders behind a striker, which usually you'd play with a back three. He's averaged nearly two successful dribbles per game, completing just over half of the ones he attempts.
This would give Spurs another option on that left hand side, with captain Heung-Min Son probably needing some rest time, academy graduate Mikey Moore not ready to be a main stay yet and Germany forward Timo Werner just outright not impressing. He would also bring a different dynamic and style to the three mentioned.
Spurs do however, face some competition off fellow Premier League clubs, Nottingham Forest and their arch rivals Arsenal. With both of these clubs in the top four and looking very strong, it could prove to be very difficult for Spurs to get their man.
There are too concerns over his attitude and short temper, as he recently received a two game ban for having a scuffle and ripping the glasses off an Ipswich Town staff member, after he was left feeling frustrated when the Tractor Boys scored a last gasp winner at Molineux last month.
He can also show his frustration to his team mates in games, as he did in the 3-1 loss at Stamford Bridge to Chelsea the other night, where Wolves fans were very critical of his performance and work rate. This is something that Ange Postecoglou might be concerned about. However, we don't know the player on a personal level, so this isn't something that we should give too much thought!
It is reported that the 'Old Gold' would want a fee of around the eighty-million pound mark for the 25-year-old Brazilian, who has picked up eleven caps for the Seleção since 2021, and ideally they wouldn't want him to leave before the end of the 2024/2025 Premier League season. This could be costly for Spurs as they are desperate now for options within the squad.
Overall, I think Cunha would be a good signing for Spurs. He seems ready to make that step up in his career after not exactly pulling up trees at the likes of RB Leipzig and Atlético Madrid, even though Tottenham aren't doing well right now, they should be competing for the European places again in the future. Even if there are concerns over his attitude and body language, he's coming into the prime years of his career and it's something he should be able to control as he matures.
