Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been suspended for seven games by the FA for making an alleged racist comment.

The incident occurred on Uruguayan TV during the summer when he was asked if he could provide a Tottenham team-mate's jersey and he responded by asking if they would like that of captain Heung-min Son.

Bentancur then reportedly claimed that the jersey could be 'the cousin of Son because they are more or less all the same'.

As a result, the FA have issued the midfielder with a seven-match ban and a £100,000 fine for an 'aggravated breach' of their rules.

Key fixtures against Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool are among the games Bentancur is set to miss, with the former Juventus man unavailable for selection until Nottingham Forest after Christmas.

The ban does not impact international selection or Europa League fixtures.

Speaking about the situation earlier this season, Son revealed that he holds no ill will towards Bentancur and has accepted his apology.

"He knew [it was wrong] and apologised straight afterwards. We were on holiday. I didn't even realise what was going on when he sent me a long message and you could feel it was coming from his heart," the South Korean stated.

"When we came back for pre-season he felt really sorry and almost cried when he apologised publicly and personally. He felt like he was really sorry. We are all human and all make mistakes and we learn from it."
