Jhon Duran has done it again for Aston Villa. The forward came off the bench to seal his side’s 3-1 win over Wolves in the Premier League on Saturday, enhancing his reputation as one of the most impactful substitutes in the division.

Duran has now scored four Premier League goals off the bench in just five appearances this season and is averaging a top-flight goal every 33 minutes in 2024/25.

The 20-year-old scored four goals as a substitute last season, the joint-most in the Premier League alongside Newcastle’s Harvey Barnes, Brighton’s Joao Pedro, Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay and Arsenal winger Leandro Trossard.

It’s taken him just five games to match the most prolific substitutes from last season and Duran will now be targeting the all-time Premier League record.

The most Premier League goals by a substitute in a single season is seven, scored by Adam Le Fondre when playing for Reading during the 2012/13 season.

He’s still got a long way to go to catch the Premier League’s ultimate super sub, with Jermain Defoe holding the record for most substitute goals in the league’s history with 24.

Duran might want to earn a more regular role before he gets close to that landmark. On current form, it should not take him long…

Most Substitute Goals in Premier League History

  • Jermain Defoe: 24
  • Olivier Giroud: 21
  • Javier Hernández: 19
  • Kanu: 17
  • Ole Gunnar Solskjær: 17
