The return of the best in the world is a beautiful thing. Alisson Becker made his triumphant return to the Liverpool starting lineup this week, and it was a masterclass in goalkeeping that proved why he’s not just Liverpool’s No. 1 but without doubt the best in the world for all reds. Any whispers about Caoimhín Kelleher staking a long-term claim for the position were definitively silenced as Alisson reminded everyone of his brilliance.
After being out of action since October 5th, many might have expected a cautious return from Alisson. Instead, he delivered a performance that could be described as flawless. The Brazilian made five crucial saves, four of which were from inside the box, demonstrating his razor-sharp reflexes and ability to remain unfazed under pressure.

As TNT Sports pointed out, this was Alisson “back in business.” His ability to pull off seemingly impossible saves is unmatched, and he showed just how important he is to Liverpool’s defensive setup.
This night was special for Alisson, not only because of his personal performance but because he etched his name into Liverpool’s history books once again. With his clean sheet, Alisson equalled Pepe Reina’s record for the most Champions League clean sheets in the modern era for Liverpool. Both now sit on 21, with Reina achieving this in 46 games and Alisson needing just three games more. Bear in mind the differences between Benitez, Klopp and Slot’s set-up too.
This doesn’t just highlight Alisson’s quality—it underscores his consistency at the highest level of European football. Time and again, Alisson has proved to be the difference-maker for Liverpool, bailing the team out with crucial saves in their most challenging moments.
Kelleher has been a reliable deputy during Alisson’s absence, but there’s a clear gap between the two. Kelleher did well in recent weeks, yet Alisson’s return showcased the level of performance that separates a world-class goalkeeper from a competent stand-in. If we’re honest, it’s unlikely Kelleher would have been able to replicate the saves Alisson made in this game.

Alisson’s ability to anticipate, react, and control the game from the back is something few goalkeepers in world football can match. As Arne Slot remarked post-game, “[He] showed today that he’s probably one of the best, in my opinion the best goalkeeper in the world. And let’s hope he can keep continuing to bring these performances. Let’s hope even more that he can stay fit.”
Another significant boost for Liverpool came in the form of their defensive core reuniting. Alisson was joined by Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, and Andy Robertson—a combination that hadn’t started together in 656 days. As TNT Sports perfectly summed it up, this felt like “just like the old times.” With Alisson back marshalling the defence, Liverpool’s backline looked cohesive, confident, and secure.
Liverpool’s aspirations for the remainder of the season hinge on keeping their key players fit, and no one is more vital than Alisson Becker. His return is a statement, not just to Liverpool’s rivals but to the footballing world—Alisson Becker is back, and he’s better than ever.
