Chelsea laid groundwork for potential signings in Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens with conversations they had in January according to reports.

The transfer window closed on Monday night with Chelsea completing the deadline day signing of St Etienne midfielder Mathis Amougou in a deal worth £12.5m.

Amougou was the only signing of the window, whilst the Blues sold Cesare Casadei to Torino, and sent Joao Felix, Axel Disasi, Renato Veiga, Ben Chilwell and Carney Chukwuemeka out on loan.

Chelsea laid groundwork for summer window

It’s no secret that Chelsea were looking to strengthen in attack during the window, given a lack of competition and alternative for Nicolas Jackson.

The club were also looking at wingers given the absence of Mykhailo Mudryk, although Maresca has named three players he feels can replace the Ukrainian.

Chelsea were said to have a five man shortlist of attacking signings, and despite being strongly linked with Garnacho no bid for the Argentina international was ever made.

Jamie Gittens is another player the Blues expressed an interest in with the Borussia Dortmund youngster set to have a host of top clubs after his signature in the summer.

Ultimately Chelsea ended the window with a weaker squad than they started it with and with less options in attack due to Felix’s departure.

However, Mail Sport have reported the Blues have done a lot of groundwork for potential buys in Garnacho and Gittens with conversations they held during the window.

In theory Chelsea should be in a better position come the summer to finalise some of these potential deals quickly given they’ve reportedly already held conversations, but time will tell.

The Blues for the remainder of the season will have to make do with what they’ve got, as they look to return to Champions League football and win silverware under Enzo Maresca.
