Tottenham Hotspur Eye Jack Grealish as Manchester City Door Edges Open

Jack Grealish’s Manchester City future appears increasingly uncertain, and Tottenham Hotspur are emerging as a realistic destination for the England international. With Kevin De Bruyne reportedly being allowed to leave after over 400 appearances, Grealish could be the next high-profile name out of the Etihad, according to Football Insider.

Having made only seven Premier League starts this season, Grealish’s diminished role under Pep Guardiola has sparked speculation across Europe. While elite clubs such as Napoli have been linked, financial limitations appear to rule them out as serious contenders. As football finance expert Stefan Borson told Football Insider, “There are not many teams around that can afford to pay him the wages he’s on at the moment.”

Grealish’s weekly wage in excess of £300,000—translating to more than £15 million a year—is a significant obstacle, even for clubs in Europe’s top five leagues. And while Saudi Arabia might offer a lucrative financial escape route, Borson is doubtful: “You would think almost certainly not, so that will probably leave if there’s anybody in the Premier League that would be interested.”

Spurs Considered Viable Destination

Tottenham Hotspur are one of the few Premier League sides known to have registered interest in Grealish. While the finances are challenging, Spurs’ long-standing admiration of the former Aston Villa man is no secret. As Borson acknowledges, “We know that Spurs have shown an interest in the player. But again, the question is, how does that work from a financial perspective given that they’re not going to pay him £300,000 a week either.”

One possible route could involve City accepting a reduced transfer fee to offload his high wages, perhaps even through a loan arrangement. This approach could allow Spurs to negotiate a wage-sharing scheme or structure a performance-based package.

There’s also the emotional angle to consider. Tottenham’s attacking style under Ange Postecoglou may appeal to Grealish, who thrives on creative freedom and fluid transitions. With Spurs likely to pursue a deeper squad to compete in Europe next season, his addition could offer invaluable depth and top-level experience.

European and Saudi Options Lose Ground

Napoli had reportedly entered the conversation, with suggestions that Antonio Conte—now back managing in Serie A—is a “huge fan” of the midfielder. However, Borson is sceptical: “I don’t see Napoli as one of the sides who would be able to pay Grealish’s wages.”

Additionally, while reports suggest that Grealish is “open-minded” about leaving Manchester, his preference is said to be a move abroad. But as Borson and Football Insider make clear, the limited financial muscle of top European clubs—and Grealish’s sizeable salary—may rule out even the most enthusiastic suitors.

Time Right for Fresh Start

For Grealish, the timing may be perfect. After a stop-start season at City and just two goals in all competitions, a move could reignite both club and international ambitions. Spurs, known for investing in players with something to prove, could offer the platform and passion Grealish needs.

There are clear challenges. Tottenham would need to negotiate a significant pay cut or heavily incentivised deal, possibly with support from City to ease the financial burden. But as Football Insider indicate, the stars may finally be aligning for a switch that once seemed out of reach.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

As a Spurs supporter, the idea of Jack Grealish in lilywhite is undeniably exciting. Despite the price tag and his recent struggles, his pedigree is unquestionable. A player who can beat his man, draw fouls and bring flair to the game is exactly what Postecoglou’s system craves.

Sure, the wages are a massive talking point. £300,000 per week? That’s not Tottenham’s usual structure. But if City are willing to lower the fee or subsidise some of the wages—even on a loan-to-buy deal—it suddenly becomes feasible.

We’ve lacked a true wildcard off the left since Gareth Bale’s second spell, and Grealish could bring that unpredictability. Let’s not forget, under the right guidance and with consistent starts, he can be unplayable. His ability to create from tight spaces would open up defences that have too often frustrated us this season.

It’s also about intent. Landing Grealish would send a statement that Spurs are serious about challenging—not just for the top four, but for trophies. If there’s ever a time to make that leap, it’s now.
