The latest Tottenham transfer target Jonathan David might demand a higher salary than Richarlison. This makes the "free" transfer look far less frugal.

Over the last few weeks, Tottenham Hotspur have been increasingly linked to the Canadian forward Jonathan David. The striker runs out of contract at the end of the 2024/25 season, with Spurs believed to be interested in bringing him for free.

Of course, no signing is ever completely free. While Spurs would be saving money in the way of a lacking transfer fee, the cost would certainly be paid through his salary.

It is expected that Jonathan David would not offer his services to Tottenham cheaply.

According to John Wenham, the owner of the Lilywhite Rose podcast, Jonathan David could demand at least £150,000 per week in his salary package. This is quite substantial and something that Spurs must consider.

Speaking to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “Coming in as a free signing, [David] will be looking for big wages, at least £150,000-per-week. You’re then looking at a signing-on fee of around £10million."

Wenham concluded: “Therefore, while it is classed as a free transfer, it certainly isn’t completely free. However, I can see the use in signing him as he can play out wide as well as upfront.”

It must be stated that if Wenham is right and David does demand £150,000, this would make him the fifth highest earner at Tottenham. He would earn more than the likes of Dejan Kulusevski, Richarlison, Pedro Porro and Brennan Johnson

Unfortunately, nothing good in life comes for free. Especially not in the world of football and double-especially not in the world of the Premier League.

Tottenham are a London-based side. While it is unspoken, there is often an additional fee mounted onto Tottenham because of this and the league they play in. Jonathan David is not clueless, he knows how much money is hoarded by Premier League clubs.

That said, nobody can deny that signing Jonathan David makes perfect sense for Tottenham. Manager Ange Postecoglou, love him or hate him, has spoke about the need to support Dominic Solanke with a new signing.

Whether or not Ange is the manager for the long-term future, he is best-placed right now to decide what Spurs need. Either way, it's difficult to deny his claim that Solanke needs support.

As pointed out by Wenham, not only would David come in and support Solanke centrally, he also has the versatility to play out wide. This would help Tottenham tenfold, particularly since they will hopefully be in Europe again next season, with a heated fixture schedule.
