The England international has been a regular starter at the club over the past 18 months, and yet, he remains one of the lowest earners in the squad. The teenager is currently on a weekly salary of £20,000. which is only a fraction of what some his teammates are making, including midfielders who are behind in the pecking order, namely Casemiro (£350k) and Christian Eriksen (£325k).

Over the past week, several sources have reported issues in the negotiations between the club’s management and Mainoo’s entourage who are seeking a new and improved contract that would allow the player to collect £200,000 per week. Some even claimed Chelsea would be the front-runners in the race to sign the young midfielder.

Nevertheless, Romano quashes all exit reports in his latest update on the Daily Briefing.

The Italian journalist insists Man Utd remain calm and composed on this front, as they have it all ‘under control’. The transfer market insider reveals that Dan Ashworth’s exit is the reason behind the delay in the contract negotiations.

The former United sporting director was apparently negotiating with the player’s entourage on the club’s behalf, until his departure by ‘mutual consent’ in early December.

So as Romano reveals, Manchester United Technical Director Jason Wilcox has now taken over from Ashworth. Hence, the journalist explains that this change prompted a certain delay, as the two parties must catch up with one another before resuming talks.

Nevertheless, the Red Devils are not panicking over the situation, as they believe they will eventually find an agreement with the youngster whom they consider ‘crucial’ for the club’s future, as Romano puts it.

Mainoo’s current contract is valid until June 2027 and it includes an additional one-year option.
