Bradford City have been issued a positive verdict over the club’s decision to let Jamie Walker’s contract expire at the end of the season.

The midfielder signed for the club in January 2022, on an initial loan deal from Scottish side Hearts. Impressive performances saw the move made permanent that summer, and the 31-year-old has remained at Valley Parade ever since.

Graham Alexander’s decision to change his system to a 3-4-3 earlier this season led to improved performances, but at the expense of Walker’s role in the side.

“The right decision” – Bradford handed seal of approval over Jamie Walker decision

FLW’s resident Bradford City fan pundit, Boris Thomson, is sad to see the Scotsman go, but ultimately understands the club’s decision.

“As much as it pains me to say it, I think it was ultimately the right decision to let Jamie Walker go. He's been a great servant to us over the years.

“He’s made over 120 appearances for us, which is a lot for a player who'd achieved as much as he had in his career prior to coming to us.

“But ultimately, I think it was the right decision to let him go. He's achieved his ultimate goal with us of getting promoted. So, it's probably time for the next step in his career.

“He probably isn't sharp enough to play in League One next year. So unfortunately, it's probably the best decision to let him go.”

Jamie Walker will go down as a fine bit of Bradford City transfer business

During such a turbulent period which has seen so many players come and go at Bradford City, Walker has survived and been a standout performer throughout.

Hardworking, determined and always willing to give his all for the shirt. These are the qualities that fans adore. The attributes that endear players to the hearts of the supporters.

Alexander’s decision not to extend the fan favourite’s deal will have been a tough one, but on the surface, looks to be correct.

As previously mentioned, the manager’s change of system has seen Walker’s influence on the team greatly reduced, and as Bradford look to upgrade their side to League One quality, the midfielder has been an unlucky casualty.

However, over the past few seasons, Walker has been one of the Bantams’ most important players, proving to be great value after joining the club for free in 2022.

Ultimately, Jamie Walker played a vital role in helping Bradford City become a better, more competitive football club that has now begun its journey back up the Football League.

For that, he will always be remembered fondly by the Bantams’ faithful, forever a welcome face at Valley Parade.
